Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji who co-chairs the task-force with his Busia counterpart Amos Wako says the reports in the media are misleading.

Haji states the task-force is still collecting views from the public and is yet to collect and compile date from eight counties.

The Garissa Senator notes that the exercise of collecting views  is going on and will be completed by August.

“The remaining counties are slated to present their views within the next three weeks beginning Tuesday,” Senator Haji said as quoted by the Daily Nation.

Haji said that the decision on whether to have referendum or not will be based on the opinions of Kenyans and not politicians.

Senator Haji’s task-force was formed after the famous May 9, 2018 handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minster Raila Odinga.

The task-force has been going around the country collecting views from Kenyans, religious leaders, politicians, human rights groups on issues touching on governance.

The BBI is expected to hand over its comprehensive report to President Uhuru Kenyatta in October.

The debate on referendum continues to take center stage as majority politicians across the political divide back.

A section of politicians are pushing for a parliamentary system that will see the re-introduction of Prime Minister Position and two deputies.

Those supporting for a parliamentary system argue that it is more inclusive compared to the current presidential system.

However, a section of politicians are against the push for creation of more seats and have vowed to oppose referendum if its focus is to give jobs to political losers.
