The gadgets went missing after suspected thieves broke into a hardware where they were being kept at Sioyi Trading Center, before making away with the state property.

Sioyi Center Content Supervisor Adrian Kemei confirmed the same, saying that he left the tablet and power bank to charge.

He also lost a USB cable, reflector jacket and a staff badge.

He said that the apparatus was stolen as the rain was pounding the area, adding that they broke into the hardware and also stealing some money that had been kept there.

"The thieves took advantage of the heavy rains that pounded the area during the night. They broke into our hardware and stole the equipment as well as a gas cylinder and some cash," he told the Standard on Saturday.

And while he said that he heard a woman screaming at night, apparently during the robbery, he says that he never heard the burglars breaking in and also did not respond to the distress calls.

West Pokot Police Commander Jackson Tumwet said that the police are tracking the gadgets.

"Census officials are advised to keep in safe custody the equipment and materials since they will pay for any losses," said the police boss, hours before the kickoff of the exercise.
