Talks of a possible referendum are gaining momentum, ahead of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) taskforce presentation of its report to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Kangata on Tuesday told the Nation that constitutional changes will bring about unity, which comes as an echo to President Uhuru and former Premier Raila Odinga's views.

With some politicians saying that the referendum drive is an expensive affair which should be avoided, he is of the opinion that unity of Kenyans should come before the cost.

"Italy has constant electoral cycles but it's a strong democracy. So I disagree that the referendum drive will affect our development. That which we lose by being a divided society is more than what we can spend to rectify the problem,” he said.

He observed that a referendum cannot interfere with Uhuru's development agenda, adding that though no money was set aside for the referendum in the budget, there are options.

"We can always do a supplementary budget as Parliament to provide for cash for the drive," said the lawmaker who doubles up as the Muranga Senator and lawyer.

And though the BBI taskforce remains mum in the details of its report, Raila, who founded the BBI alongside Uhuru after their 2018 truce, has hinted that it will propose major changes.
