In a post on Facebook just moments after media reports of the death, Kabogo expressed his sadness and disbelief at the death.

He revealed that the two had agreed to have tea at his house on Monday. That was not to be.

"I’ve received the sad news of the demise of my friend John Demethiu. My brother you was to come to my hse for tea kesho. I can’t believe it John that you’re no more. RIP. fare thee well my friend.you refused to come to my hse yesterday so you could finish your medication, how I wish I had insisted (sic)" Kabogo wrote.

De Mathew reportedly lost his life after a car he was travelling in rammed into a lorry at Blue Post.

He was a household name especially in central Kenya where he's revered as a legend.

His songs enjoyed tremendous airplay on Kikuyu radio stations.

Even though a revered musician, his career was not without controversy.

He faced charges alongside other Kikuyu musicians, Kamande wa Kioi and Muigai wa Njoroge, of singing a song whose lyrics were seen as inciteful.
