Last year, Harambee Stars players Victor Wanyama and Michael Olunga went through various experiences on and off the pitch.
The highlight for Wanyama was of course wearing the captain’s armband as Harambee Stars faced Senegal, Algeria and Tanzania in group matches of last year’s edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.
Olunga was also part of the AFCON team, managing to score two goals against Tanzania, but his year was headlined by the 27 goals he scored for his side Kashiwa Reysol.
The goals greatly contributed to Kashiwa’s promotion from Japanese’s League 2 to the top tier league.
Following the important fete, Olunga who previously played for Gor Mahia, Tusker FC and Thika United in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) is reported to be attracting suitors from across the world.
A section of Kenyan football legends and pundits have suggested that it is time for the lanky forward to pack up his bags and move away from Japan.
This year, many are waiting to see if Olunga will move away from Japan and join a new club, most probably in Europe for a ‘real football challenge’.
I hold the view that he should leave Kashiwa, a team he joined in 2018, for a more competitive league where he can face tough opponents, and improve his ability.
On the other hand, all eyes are on Wanyama with reports indicating that he may bring his stay at English side Tottenham Hotspur to an end due to limited game time.
It is an open secret that he is being courted by his former side, Scottish giants Celtic among other teams in Europe.
It is my view that he should ditch Spurs and seek game time elsewhere since age is almost catching up with him.
