On Thursday, the ministry released a statement stating that any teacher found using the book 'blood ties' among other unapproved books risk going to jail for three years.

This is after it was discovered that some schools were procuring unapproved books that contained inappropriate content.

"You are therefore required to bring to the immediate attention of all principals and headteachers that only books listed in the orange book are allowed for use in schools," read a statement from Elyas Abdi, director-general for basic education as quoted by Citizen Digital.

Abdi warned that any principal or headteacher who won't adhere to the directive will be contravening section 27 of the KCID Act, 2013.

Those found culpable of contravening the act will be liable to three years imprisonment or a one million shillings fine or both.

The book in question 'blood ties' elicited sharp comments from Kenyans who questioned why the publisher approved a book that had obscene language and violent characters.

Storymoja, the publisher of 'blood ties' on Thursday released a statement saying they have recalled the book after reviewing it.

"Taking into accounts the concerns raised, we are currently in the process of recalling all copies of the book from schools and bookstores nationwide. Primary School, teachers and parents who have purchased this book are advised to get in touch with storymoja," read the statement.
