In an interview with NTV Am Live on Tuesday, Wamatangi said that the commission has developed the habit of bungling elections across the country in the recent past.

He affirmed that the commission is not independent as it has always been said.

He noted that the decision to clear Footballer MacDonald Mariga after deliberation clearly shows that something is not right somewhere.

He also said that Mariga was right to vie for the seat and no law barred him from throwing his hat in the ring.

“The culprit for messing up elections has always been IEBC. We should act proactively to get IEBC to clean itself up and reconstitute it,” he said.

On his part, Tongaren MP Eseli Simiyu said that the decision to clear Mariga was shocking. He wondered whether the commission is independent as claimed.

He reminded the Wafula Chebukati-led commission that it has to act within its jurisdiction and not allow to be manipulated by some forces from above.

“Their decision is not shocking to me because they are not independent. IEBC is supposed to be independent; it’s never been,” he said.
