In an interview on NTV’s AM Live show, Otiende said that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) should have cross-examined Mariga's age and National ID.

“I think they got it wrong in so many ways including the question of age. You know they admitted someone called Conjela who came with all sorts of issues including the discrepancies in Mariga’s age. Then the IEBC said we are not going to examine other incidental issues because those are for another forum we will only focus on the original issue. But come to think of it, if he presented an ID which he said has now been questioned on whether it was fraudulent or not, then it is part of what the IEBC must establish,” he said.

Otiende also faulted the commission for not taking into account the proposals of the returning officer before clearing Mariga to contest in the race.

“They (IEBC) nullified the decision of the returning officer, but they did not establish if Mariga’s name appears anywhere in the register,” he said.

Mariga is set to lock horns with ODM's Imran Okoth and other candidates in the by-election scheduled for November 7.
