President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday showered praises on globally renowned Kenyan athletes: Eliud Kipchoge, and Brigid Kosgei.

In his Mashujaa Day speech to Kenyans at the Mama Ngina Waterfront, the Head of State praised the two for achieving what he characterised as an unthinkable fete.

He said by setting new world records, Kipchoge and Kosgei made Kenyans proud.

"Eliud Kipchoge and Brigid Kosgei have made us proud. Kipchoge has achieved the unthinkable fete," the president said.

President Kenyatta also hailed the athletes for being patrons of integrity and showing the rest of Kenyans that hard work and a honest life can yield success.

Brigid set the world record in the Chicago Marathon, breaking the record that had been set by British athlete Paula Radcliffe.

Elsewhere, Kipchoge became the first person in the world  to run a full marathon in under two hours.

President Kenyatta said Kipchoge was the greatest of all time thanks to his recent achievement in Vienna, Austria.

"Eliud Kipchoge remains the Greatest Of All Our Time. We can achieve the very best as individuals and as a country collectively, " the president said.

The Mashujaa Day celebrations were held for the first time in the port city of Mombasa at the Mama Ngina Waterfront.
