All indications show that President Uhuru Kenyatta has no plans of retiring from politics after the expiry of his term in 2022, says veteran politician Koigi Wa Wamwere.

Speaking on Saturday, Wamwere predicted that Uhuru might remain around even after the 2022 general elections, basing it on his support for the constitutional amendment push.

Wamwere, a former Subukia parliamentrarian, stated that Uhuru might be seeking to prolong his stay in leadership, hence his support for plans to ammend the constitution.

He said that until Uhuru drops his support for the same, he will continue observing him as a man unwilling to leave power, atleast in 2022.

"Uhuru is still on the field, he has not left yet. I will know he has left when the amendment push drops (Uhuru yumo uwanjani, hajajitoa. Nitajua amejitoa wakati katiba itawacha kubadilishwa)," said the former Assistant Cabinet Minister.

He made the remarks on Radio Sauti Ya Mwananchi's Cheche show on Saturday evening, also attended by former The National Alliance (TNA) chair for Nakuru County Abdul Noor.

He opined that Uhuru is most likely keen on riding on the narrative behind the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) referendum proposal, which seeks to expand the government, to remain in government in a different capacity.

The former political detainee observed that the plan is most likely to share seats with among others, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga, his critic-cum-close ally.

"When you see thw constitution being amended to establish the presidential and prime misniterial seats, they are for two people; Raila and Uhuru (Ukiona katiba inabadilishwa kuleta viti vya waziri mkuu na rais, hivi ni vya watu wawili; Raila na Uhuru)," he added.

And while Uhuru has not been as vocal about the issue, Raila and team have passionately insited that constitutional amendments are inevitable and opposers will be swept away.

But the proposal is facing stiff opposition from the Deputy President William Ruto camp, which has termed it a plot to house some political losers in government.
