He arrived on Friday afternoon in a convoy of police vehicles.

The county boss is expected to be held at the EACC for grilling before being arraigned in court to face charges relating to the abuse of office for personal gain and money laundering.

His arrest came just hours after the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Hajji ordered law enforcement authorities to arrest the governor on first sighting.

EACC says that the governor was nabbed while trying to evade arrest in Voi, Taita Taveta county.

The dramatic arrest marks another escalation in the war against corruption that is being waged by the Uhuru-led administration.

Sonko now joins the list of county bosses who have bee arrested over abuse of office while in office.

He faces the very prospect of being ordered not to step in his offices like his Kiambu and Samburu counterparts, Governor Ferdinand Waititu and Moses Lenolkulal respectively.

The governor continues to protest his innocence, saying that the charges levelled against him are politically instigated.

Arresting Sonko was an uphill task riddled with many challenges.

"Investigation into these crimes have been challenging because of the repeated attempt by the accused to obstruct the cause of the investigations by deploying investigation tactics in addition to using goons to threaten law enforcement officials carrying out their constitutional mandate,” the DPP said.
