1. The security thread

All Kenya shillings notes have woven thread that appears metallic or silvery on the right-hand side. In 1000 and 500 shillings notes, the thread appears thicker while in 200, 100 and 50 shillings note it appears thinner. A note without this thread is fake.

2. The texture of the president's coat

The president's coat texture should be rough when touched and should not wear off when scratched.

3. The Lion (portrait watermark)

When you hold the note against a light source, you should be able to see the head of a lion. This is the most common way to identify a fake note.

4. See-through feature or the elephant

On the bottom left of a note, there is a portrait of an elephant. You should be able to see a full elephant when you hold the note against a light source.

5. The serial number

Every legit Kenya shillings note should have a serial number. On the right side, the serial number will appear horizontally and the digits will appear to increase progressively in size. On the left-hand side, the serial number appears vertically and will glow when viewed under UV light.

6. Their Sizes

All Kenya shillings notes have their sizes. 50 shilling notes are the smallest and the 1000 shillings notes are the largest.
