Conte announced that he would tender his resignation to the President Sergio Materella as required by law.

The resignation is the culmination of the supremacy battles that pitted him against the country's Interior Minister Mateo Salvini.

Salvini had promoted a vote of no confidence against Conte who decided to avoid it by resigning.

As he made public his resignation, the Prime Minister attacked Mateo Salvini who also doubles up as the deputy Prime Minister, accusing him of being driven by selfish interests in plunging the country into a crisis.

“He is only looking after his own interests and those of his party,” said Conte according to The Guardian

“Calling on voters every year is irresponsible," he added.

President Materella will seek to bring together new coalition partners to form a government or call snap elections in case he's unable to convince party leaders to cobble a new government.

Italy has been rocked by the political crisis as the deputy Prime Minister flexed his muscle.

The Italian crisis has been precipitated, by strong policy differences between Conte's Five Star Movement and Salvini's The far-right League.
