Gateri was arrested on July 2, 2019. In September, he appealed to be dropped from the case which also includes Secretary for Innovation, Digital and Diaspora Communication at the Office of the President, Dennis Itumbi.

According to his application, he had been arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

His items were then taken from him, which include his phone, and ID card among other things.

He claims the detectives also threatened him. They asked him to co-operate or else they would have taken him to a high ranking security personnel.

On Thursday, Gateri was charged with two criminal counts.

He was charged with forging documents, which he said was from a Cabinet Secretary. Secondly, he was charged with sharing the documents on social media.

However, he denied the two charges and was released on Sh100, 000 bail.

The court further directed the witness to avoid sharing information pertaining to the case on social media.

His case will now be treated as that of Itumbi.

It is alleged that Itumbi also shared the alleged fake letter to a WhatsApp group.
