Senator Irungu Kang’ata has weighed on in the recent revelation of a first-class Honours Graduates living in deplorable conditions because of unemployment.

The student, Kelvin Ochieng’ has decried lack of jobs despite having a degree and scoring straight A’s. In an interview with Citizen TV on Monday, the senator said that the young man ought to have been more aggressive considering the stiff competition on the market. 

He noted that Kelvin has the potential and he could have used the same to rise above the storm. Kelvin studied at Maranda High School before proceeding to the University of Nairobi.

The senator said that he acknowledges the fact that there are many jobless Kenyans in the nation but his case is different. 

“I also blame Kelvin, to some extent. I think that was a wrong career choice for him. There is a professional course Actuarial scientists take to make them employable. The last time I checked, only 8 Kenyans had been certified to practice,” he said.

On his part, Ledama ole Kina, Narok Senator said that time has come for Universities to teach students to be job creators and not job seekers. 

He noted that the market has stiff competition but creative students are more likely to be successful compared to those who aren’t creative in any way.

“Universities need to be creative, prepare their students to face life so that the course one does is complete in itself without the need to do professional courses,” he said.
