Speaking during the Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo Stadium on Thursday, Uhuru said that the lawmakers cannot serve two masters.

"State and public officers are not above the law...One cannot serve as a legislator at the National or County level while at the same time practising law whether or not for gain."

Murkomen and Mutula have been on spot for representing Sonko. Other leaders/public officers who have represented corruption suspects are Siaya Senator James Orengo and Makueni MP Dan Maanzo.

Uhuru said that the same applies to other government officials including teachers and doctors among others.

"A teacher in public service, cannot have one foot in the classroom and the other in parliament...professionals who take upstate or public office should give up a private practice and devote their full time on public duties," he said.

In his speech, Uhuru also said that there is a need for the nation to work together for the sake of economic empowerment. He asked Kenyans to embrace tolerance and concentrate on matters of development.

"A nation is only as strong as its institution. Personalities will always come and go, but institutions endure. It is, therefore, my intention to ensure that we fully institutionalise our governance and values as laid out in our constitution," added Uhuru.
