With constitutional amendments expected in 2020, Mr Odinga has already shifted his eyes in Mt Kenya and Rift Valley regions, where he performed dismally in the last two outings.

To keep his strongholds intact, Odinga has reunited with NASA principals, aiming to use the handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta to develop the regions ahead of 2022.

"We don't need to worry for Western, Nyanza, Coast and Nairobi. The handshake will take care of everything. We are now focusing on development for easy campaigning," said an ODM lawyer in confidence.

To bring Mt Kenya region closer to his heart, Odinga has held several meetings with current and former leaders, with an aim of popularising Building Bridges Initiative.

Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru has been on the front line pushing for the agenda. Early this week, she said that the region will have no problem supporting Mr Odinga's bid.

"Raila Odinga is my friend, he is my political ally. We discuss serious talks. We had a history but we settled that," she said.

Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has been another proponent of the Handshake. The first term MP has been giving DP William Ruto's team headache in the region.

On Friday, Ngunjiri, admitted indirectly that he won't have issues backing Mr Odinga's bid as long as President Uhuru Kenyatta directs him to do so.

"But of course the only way am going to join Raila Odinga is if Uhuru Kenyatta were to tell me to do so. Till then am #UhuruPekee," he wrote in reference to a local publication.

Others are Murang'a Woman Representative Sabina Chege and CAS Rachael Shebesh. Ms Shebesh is one of masterminds of Team Embrace, which supports the handshake.

In Rift Valley, besides working with Senator Gideon Moi, Mr Odinga recently met Chama Cha Mashinani leader Isaac Ruto at his Capitol Hill offices.

Also present in the meeting were former ministers Paul Sang and Franklin Bett. Former Kuresoi MP Zakayo Cheruiyot was also part of the delegation. The team works well with Senator Moi.

"We discussed politics and the interest of the Kalenjin community politically in the wake of the handshake. We want to be part of the process and build a cohesive country," Mr Sang said.

Elgeyo-Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos is also becoming an integral part of Odinga's team. For the last two months, he has met the former PM thrice.

"Before Mr Odinga toured Chebara recently, I asked the President if I could attend the meeting. The President told me that I should have already made plans to welcome him (Odinga) at the venue by the time we are talking," the county boss said.

And to wrap up his plot against DP William Ruto, Odinga has successfully enticed Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny to his team. Mr Kutuny has intensified his onslaught against Ruto.

In July, Odinga attended the retirement of Kutuny's mother-in-law where they called for arrest of Kimwarer and Arror dams scandal.
