Speaking on Saturday in Muranga County in the Kikuyu vernacular during the musician's funeral, Uhuru reminded mourners that DeMathew died as he was coming from helping a friend.

"There is someone who said, I can't remember who said, John was a very important person because he never forgot his friends. (John oguo hagwetwo haha, dinamenya oo oguetire, ari mundu wa bata mono todo dariganerwo na arata ake), " President Uhuru said. (0:40-1:06)

"Despite focusing on his own things, John never forgot these people," he added.

John DeMathew was laid to rest in Muranga county in a burial that was attended by a list of high profile people that read like a roll call of who is who in the world of Kenyan politics.

President Uhuru also described the fallen Benga crooner as a close friend, saying that the news of his death made him feel very bad.

The renowned musician died in a grisly road accident along the Thika Super Highway at Kenol, an infamous blackspot known for fatal road crashes.

At the time of his death, DeMathew was on his way back home after performing in an event aimed at raising funds for a friend.
