Speculations were rife that Ombija was to replace Mohammed on his News Night show.

The highly regarded news anchor announced earlier this month in a tweet that he was quitting the station at the end of this month.

In an interview with Kenyans.co.ke, Ombija, however, refuted claims that said he had been chosen to replace Hussein Mohamed.

He said Hussein was unwell, which was the reason why he was stepping in, adding that Royal Media Services management is yet to appoint who will be taking after him.

"I am standing in for Mohamed who is unwell. No one can replace him and the decision on who will take over has not yet been made. I believe whoever will be chosen will be up to the task and will bring his or her own unique style to the show," Ombija said as quoted by Kenyans.co.ke.

The former NTV news anchor on Tuesday tweeted that he would be hosting Hussein's Tuesday 'News Night Show' setting in motion the speculations.

"FLOODS: Disaster or wasted resources? Tonight on #NewsNight Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa sets the record straight @citizentvkenya," Ombija tweeted.

Hussein Mohammed has been at Citizen TV for the past 10 years.
