Estranged Migori Governor Okoth Obado collapsed on Saturday morning and was rushed to Nairobi Hospital, a senior ODM official has claimed.
Mr. Obado, who was arrested on Friday, will be charged for murder over the death of Sharon Otieno, his lover on Monday.
"I am reliably told he collapsed in Gigiri police station early in the morning.
"He was rushed to Nairobi Hospital and was stabilised hours later before returning to the police station under tight security," says the source who spoke in confidence.
However, he adds, the governor's health is stable and the he may have suffered from stress after it emerged that his bank accounts had been frozen.
Detectives traced Obado's phone at the crime scene despite his earlier statement that he was in Nairobi.
A taxi driver Jackson Gombe, reports the Standard, also revealed that the second term ODM governor was at Kodera forest where Sharon's lifeless body was retrieved.
"The driver was not aware of the plan to abduct the student and the journalist. He confided with the investigators that he saw the governor and he could be turned to a state witness," a DCI source said.
On Monday, Obado will be the first governor in the history of Kenya to face murder charges.
Gigiri OCPD Richard Mwangi dismissed the claims adding that the governor was in good health.
“Let it be known that Obado is in good health. I can give you an assurance he’s in good health,” said Mwangi.
“I can confirm verbally that Mheshimiwa, the prisoner in our custody is here, well and in good health. He however says it is true that life in a police cell is difficult.”
