Twitter went ablaze on that announcement,  many claiming the so-called "defaulters " comprise mostly of unemployment graduates rather than those who are employed and never pay.

Many affected wanted Embakasi East Member of Parliament,  who was previously the President of Student Union at the University of Nairobi and the overall chairman of Kenya University students' organization,  to intervene as he can relate much better.

The legislator,  through a statement on Twitter,  appeared to say he doesn't support the government move, claiming Kenya has not even paid China.

"No comrade should pay the HELB loan. Kama ya China haijalipwa (If China's debt has not been paid) why should comrades pay? " posed the Embakasi Legislator in a tweet.

His tweet attracted mixed reactions and here are some of the responses.

Some thought he is misleading those who have not paid back to the loans board.

"Mheshimiwa I highly look up to you. On this one you are wrong. HELB "Financial Aid" is supposed to be a circular program. When its paid back, comrades who come after getting money to borrow to graduate into gainful employment. They pay back and new comrades borrow the cycle continues," wrote Ajulu Opiyu.

"After paying yours to get HELB clearance, you're misleading others not to pay. Let whoever has a job pay and the many who don't have jobs shouldn't be harassed - simple," wrote Philosopher.

Others were in support claiming the government wants to be targeting unemployed youths when there is a lot of scandals where public money was lost.

"Exactly, they thought it was easy to triumph youths than following all the other scandals," replied Seitai Lepran.

"Very right, how can even a comrade pay the HELB Loan without a job in the first place?? We are being played, HELB in conjunction with the government," wrote Duncan Muga.

A section wanted the legislator to use his constitutional powers to sponsor a bill that will ensure a smooth way of handling the matter

"An mp who should be drafting a bill for waivers on helb loans and penalties and ensure a strategic mechanism for settling these loans by unemployed youths is now vomiting $hit.totally brainless! You aspire to be president one day, act like one!" replied Wilson Mwangi.
