Sonko is facing an ouster after he was arraigned in court and charged with corruption, which has seen him blocked from handling county matters until the case is determined.

Okango on Sunday backed plans by Members of the Nairobi County Assembly to impeach the governor, which is provided for in the constitution of Kenya.

In a tweet, he observed that it's only through an impeachment that the city, which is currently in a crisis due to the absence of a deputy governor, can be salvaged.

He now wants County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi to convene a special sitting, given that the MCAs are on recess, where the motion will be tabled and discussed.

"To save Nairobi, impeachment of the County boss as provided for in Article 181 of CoK 2010 read together with Section 33 of County Government Act, 2012 is clear. Speaker @BEATRICEELACHI should go ahead and approve a special sitting," he wrote.

Sonko is also facing separate charges over allegations that he assaulted police officers that were deployed to arrest him in Voi last Friday.
