Gusii region is known for its wonderful climate, fertile lands and plenty of food. On the flip side, there is some negative stereotypes eg witchcraft which is a story for another day. Now as the year comes to an end, we look at some of the great names in 2017 that hail from Gusii land.
1. Cyprian Nyakundi 2017 cannot be mentioned without Nyakundi Cyprian. He is a renown blogger who was listed among the top 100 most influential youths in Africa alongside Larry Madowo and Boniface Mwangi. He is famously known for his boychild campaign and the anti-slayqueen campaign which has raised mixed reactions from all over. He has even been declared the 'Boychild President.'2. CS Fred Matiangi The Education and Internal Security Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi has been hitting the headlines year long. He is the only CS holding two Cabinet positions. He is one who is known for his no-nonsense nature. He has made some significant changes in the education sector including the early release of national examinations. He is one of the government officials who has a known track record. He was also very instrumental in the general elections playing a key role in delivering Jubilee votes from Gusii land especially from Nyamira county. 3. CJ David Maraga2017 has been the election year and that where CJ Maraga comes in. CJ Maraga handled the presidential petitions twice, the first and the most memorable which was presented by the Nasa team, a petition which made the CJ recognized worldwide for being the third in the world to nullify a presidential election and the first in Africa. He is also known for his strong stand when it comes to the Sabbath for he is a staunch SDA church member and elder. 4. Hon Simba AratiAmong the members of Parliament from Nairobi County, the ODM legislator for Dagoretti happens to be the most vocal alongside the likes of Babu Owino. Hon Arati became the talk of the day during the electioneering period when there were what was claimed to be a Mungiki attack at Kawangware. His name was echoed all over with claims that he fueled the violence by sending goons to attack jubilee supporters in the area. Well, the real truth about the whole incident is unclear but Hon Arati is a force that can't be ignored. 5. Hellen ObiriThe 28year old Hellen Obiri is a Kenyan middle distance athlete hailing from Gusii land. She is the current 5000m world champion, a win she got at the 2017 world championships held in London. She made us proud as Kenyans by winning a gold medal. Congratulations Obiri. 6. KevinI don't really recall his second name but that doesn't matter. What matters is that Kevin, a 26year old Pastor from Ogembo in Kisii County brought Kenya into the limelight after he was featured in a live Dr Phill show in the US. Kevin was responsible for the breaking of an 18-year-old marriage after he said he loved Sarah, an American woman whom he had an online relationship but had never met. Despite being a pastor he claimed he doesn't care what the Bible said about that as long as they are in love. Crazy, right? 7. NyashinskiNyamari Ongegu AKA Nyashinski is a Kenyan rapper/hip-hop artist who has really shaken the musical waves in 2017. The rapper who is a former member of the Kleptomaniax band came back from majuu as a whole new Nyashinski. His first solo song Now you know was a real hit, a song that stuck on everyone's lips and hearts. He has released other songs including the latest named Hayawani. 8. Kennedy Okongo mong'areHe was the former senator from Nyamira County, a man with big dreams, a man who had an interest in the Kenya presidential seat. Well, what he will be remembered for is that time during a Senate seating, he was in favor of legalization of bhang which he admitted he used to consume in his childhood. He claims that Bhang is good if used responsibly. Well, I don't know about you but I would have loved to have him during the presidential campaigns, he seemed to be an interesting guy.
