In a blow by blow account by journalist John Onyando as explained in 'Failed Quest for Electoral Justice', Winnie Odinga, Raila's youngest daughter, is mentioned as the catalyst behind wrangles withing the Secretariat.

With Raila's brother Oburu Oginga playing a passive role, Winnie, the only active member of Odinga family, was assigned to take over Communication Office team.

But her persistent undermining attitude towards his boss, Willis Otieno, directly affected the campaigns.

In one instance, Winnie is said to have embarrassed Kisumu Senator Anyang' Nyong'o, later the governor of the lakeside city.

"Nyong'o came along with Aristotle Group consultants and introduced them to the secretariat. He then handed over to Otieno, who was incharge of the team.

"When Otieno was introducing his team, he only referred to Winnie as one of the member," recalls Onyando.

Subsequently, an irked Winnie rudely interrupted Mr. Otieno, insisting that the latter worked under him.

"He is not the one incharge. I am the one in control," she said despite the face that Otieno was head of campaigns.

Mr. Onyando was working as part of the Communication team and had been hired by Salim Lone.

In his book, he claims that Winnie's antagonistic approach to issues demoralised members of the campaign including Otieno.

So divided was the Secretariat that Nyong'o, who was partly working as political strategist, advised Raila to technically replace demoralised Otieno.

In his place, Joe Ager would be brought in, a move that further escalated internal intrigues.

At some point, Ager and Otieno openly deferred when they separately appointed different National Agents for Raila.

While Ager preferred James Orengo and Johnson Muthama, Otieno pushed for Ogla Karani and Musalia Mudavadi.
