The residents led by Benjamin Maeba accused the posho mill owners of taking advantage of the 16 percent VAT on petroleum products to hike prices.

"We have been taking maize to posho mills for milling at a cost of Sh5 per kilogram but, since the implementation of 16 per cent VAT on petroleum products took effect, posho mill owners hiked the milling prices to Sh25 per kilogram of maize," he said.

According to Mr Maeba, the posho mill owners are exploiting poor villagers who are struggled to put food on the table.

Margaret Mokeira stated that her family has not eaten ugali for the last 1 week since the posho mill owners hiked prices.

"I have opted to prepare cooked banana for my 3 kids and husband to eat because I can't afford to pay Sh25. It is time President Uhuru Kenyatta should do something and bring down the fuel prices," she said.

A spot check confirmed that indeed most posho mills have hiked milling prices from Sh5 toSh15-30 per kilogram.
