Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV on Wednesday, Mutua said that the election of Sonko to lead Nairobi was a grave mistake.

He argued that the former Senator had proved beyond doubt that he cannot lead a county yet he was elected.

"Mike Sonko should never have been elected as Governor. We cannot surrender to the lowest among us. You cannot accept mediocrity on the basis of “there’s nothing we can do” he said.

The US-based Kenyan scholar noted that the residents of Nairobi should blame themselves for the election of the county boss, further reminding them that choices always have consequences in life.

"Nairobians ought to be ashamed of themselves for electing this person as Nairobi Governor; even garnering more votes than Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga. What are Nairobians seeing?" he posed.

On the clearance of the governor to run for the seat, he maintained that there are many loopholes in the law arguing that even those with dark past records can take advantage of these loopholes to rise to power in different offices.

"This state is a criminal state; it gave Sonko clearance to run for MP, Senate and Governor. All the while, he was a criminal, had no degree, has openly admitted to have been a fraudster and still got State House’s clearance," he added.
