The unit, which is an extension of Nairobi's Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital, has over 40 patients with some having stayed at the facility for over 30 years.

Governor Lee Kinyanjui said the hospital should be given a special grant to cater for the psychiatric patients at the institution who require round the clock attention.

“We have already written to the national government, through the Cabinet Secretary for Health Sicily Kariuki, requesting for funding for the Mental Health Unit for the Gilgil sub-county hospital,” said Kinyanjui.

The Governor announced that his administration has already allocated  Sh40 million for the modernization of the hospital in the current financial year.

Gilgil sub-county hospital medical superintendent Dr Dorcas Murage said some of the patients at the facility were abandoned by their relatives.

“Some of the patients were abandoned by their relatives which has forced the hospital to shoulder the burden of catering for their basic needs for years,” said Dr.Murage.
