Residents of Kobala Village in Homa Bay County are still coming to terms following an incident where an elderly couple was allegedly killed by their son over land.

78-year-old Harrison Jonyo and his wife 70-year-old Isca Atieno died after fire razed down their three-bedroom house.

The house is alleged to have been burnt down by one Samuel Ogweno, who is a son to the deceased.

The two were rushed to Matata Hospital in Oyugis, but succumbed to burns they sustained during the house fire.

Area Chief Joel Owenga said the suspect who has since been arrested had threatened to hack his parents to death over land.

"We have been trying to mediate following a family wrangle over land involving the couple, his son and grandchildren," the Chief was quoted by Nation.

According to the chief, the land row pitting the elderly couple against Mr Samuel Ogweno started in 2012 when the son demanded that his parents give him his share of their land.

The Chief said that in 2014, Mr Ogweno and his sons attacked Mzee Jonyo with a machete injuring him on his hands and thighs.
