A union of state agencies has made a proposal to the Senate, seeking to have all state officials implicated in graft step aside to give room for investigations.

Led by Attorney General Kihara Kariuki the corruption and economic crimes agencies have appealed the Senate Justice, Legal and Human Rights commission to back the proposal.

Though the AG, the is stressing on the need to have officials, including county officers and other constitutional office holders to step aside when named in corruption related crimes.

He noted that sustaining them in office renders their prosecution and subject to the law almost impossible as they possess powers enabling them to interfere with the cases.

"This portends challenges in terms of tampering with evidence and witnesses, and interference with investigations and prosecution,” he was quoted by the People Daily on Thursday.

Kariuki and team proposed a constitutional amendment to realise that, apart from helping the government successfully combat graft, also smoothen the process of asset recovery.

"We appeal that this committee supports the proposed review of legislation that will enhance the government’s anti-corruption war and recovery of proceeds of crime,” he added.

The committee is headed by Nandi Senator and a close ally of Deputy President William Ruto Samson Cherargei.

The proposal comes amid a reignited war on graft, one that the DP's allies have condemned, terming it a deliberate plan aimed at dealing the DP ahead of the 2022 general elections.
