The move was rejected by the Nakuru County Assembly health committee.

The committee said the developer was not sincere in his plans when he purchased the land.

“This parcel of land was previously owned by Kings Outreach Ministry who later transferred, by way of sale, to a private developer named Mahesh Kumal (Maya Emporium),” read the committee’s report.

According to the chair of the committee MCA Peter Njuguna, the proposed six acres cemetery was to accommodate 400 bodies.

It emerged that Mr Kumal had informed the locals that his intention was to put up a hotel but later changed to constructing a private cemetery contrary to the wishes of the locals.

Sentiments echoed by area MCA Isaac Wahome who said the locals are totally opposed to the cemetery plans.

The Department of Public Health was directed to take charge of the situation and make sure no cemetery is constructed.

In its report, the assembly committee has recommended a school or a hospital to be built in the area instead of the proposed cemetery.

Nakuru County faces a serious shortage of public cemeteries.

The county has set aside Sh45 million for the purchase of cemetery land in the 2018/2019 financial year.
