Controversial Kenyan politician Miguna Miguna on Monday morning aired out his opinion on the impending referendum.
The former Nairobi gubernatorial race candidate claimed that spending billions on a referendum was reckless citing that a constitution should be enforced and not amended.
"The Constitution isn't responsible for tribalism, electoral fraud, human rights abuses, impunity, looting, unemployment, homelessness, food insecurity or health and education crisis. Spending billions on a referendum is reckless. The Constitution should be ENFORCED; not amended," Miguna Miguna wrote on Twitter
Miguna Miguna who is also a lawyer, argued that constitution amendments should stem from political crisis.
"Transformative constitutions are enacted during political crisis or following revolutions. Whenever constitutions have been enacted or amended during periods of relative peace, they have been used by those in power to illegitimately extend their reign or to impose tyranny," he said.
Miguna Miguna's expression on referendum comes shortly after he congratulated the Thirdway Alliance party leader Ekuru Aukot for succeeding in collecting 1.2 million signatures in a bid to fight for the referendum.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) verified the Thirdway Alliance party as having met the necessary requirements for a referundum after they collected over 1 million signatures.
