The suspect, Ali Ibrahim Aloice also referred to as Mbala Mbala, was facing charges of robbery with violence.

Aloice was allegedly being accused of stealing a mobile phone and a wrist watch from Abdallah Mbarak Mohamed alongside other suspects.

The accused was further charged together with Mohammed Abdi Mahmoud and Abulrahman Abdilahi of stealing a cellphone from Nabir Ahmed Omar at Buxton area in Mvita sub-county, Mombasa on January 31, 2019.

The three, however, denied the charges and Mohammed and Abulrahman were released on a bond of Sh500,000 each.

Mombasa Senior Principal Magistrate Henry Nyakwemba directed that Aloice be released on a Sh1 million bond.

Aloice, however, pleaded with the court to lower the bond to a payable cash bail.

Magistrate Nyakwemba, however, rejected his request saying if released on a payable amount, the accused might escape.

The magistrate said Aloice will remain in police custody if he fails to pay the bond.

Aloice appeared in court with a bandage on his head claiming that he was assaulted by the police.

According to The Standard, last week, when he appeared in court, Aloice who could barely stand claimed that he was assaulted at Makupa Police Station by police officers who threatened to kill him.

The hearing was suspended and Magistrate Nyakwemba ordered for the suspect to be taken to hospital for treatment.

The case will be mentioned on March 17, 2019.
