The incident happened on Saturday in Nyaguku, Magombo in Manga, Nyamira County.

Residents said the chief, Ben Ongoro, had gone with Nyumba Kumi officials to the man’s house to arrest the suspect for engaging in illicit trade when he was attacked by a machete.

“Ongoro has stepped up efforts in the area to arrest bhang sellers and chang’aa sellers. The suspect, James Onwong’a attacked the chief with a panga when he was ordered to surrender all the bhang he was hiding in his house,” said a local Joseph Kimasu.

The chief, who was cut on his right hand with a panga after he had been kicked on his manhood, said the suspect wanted to chop off his manhood.

He assured that he will not succumb to the attacks and threats from illegal traders in the area.

"Onwong’a wanted to chop off my head but God saved me. We managed to arrest with over 100 rolls of bhang and half a liter of chang’aa.

"He has been selling bhang to locals and school boys. He is currently being booked at Manga police station,” he said.

The administrator said the suspect will be arraigned in court on Monday to be charged.

He warned locals against selling bhang and illicit brews saying the laws will not be bent for them.
