Earlier this month, a report released by the office of Lamu Senior Resident Kadhi Swaleh Mohamed indicated that the county's divorce rate stands at 60 per cent.

The Lamu Council of Elders and religious leaders in the area have raised concerns over cases of couples diverting their attention from their partners to porn.

According to the elders, spouses are spending a lot of time on the internet and on social media platforms, setting aside very little time for their partners and marriages.

The Council's Secretary-General Abubakar Shelali said spouses are rushing to ask for divorce so that they can freely watch pornography.

“A man would rather be alone and get his sexual gratification from watching videos. They rush for divorce at the slightest provocation because they are addicted to this dirty habit,” Shelali said.

Shelali added that porn addicts are never willing to solve marital issues when they arise.

“They don’t see the need for a wife or husband because they have designed another option. It’s a sad state of affairs,” Shelali added.

The Council's deputy chairperson said men are the most affected with this kind of addiction.

The Coast Interfaith Council of Clerics chairman Ustadh Mohamed Abdulkadir said watching such content goes against the law of the Muslim religion.

He asked people to seek God's help to overcome such addictions.

“If you seek to be close to Allah, you will teach your eyes to resist evil. You will teach your heart to desire good. What is happening is not Allah’s will at all,” Abdulkadir said.
