President Uhuru Kenyatta flagged off the first direct flight from Nairobi to US since 1988 at a function held in Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Sunday 10:45pm local time.

On board were four pilots led by 65-year-old Captain Kinuthia and twelve other flight attendants along with passengers.

It has taken Kenya several years to negotiate for the direct flights, which would boost the economy of the country.

At the JKIA, Uhuru was accompanied by Deputy President William Ruto, Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma, her Transport counterpart James Macharia among other government officials.

The plane touched down at around 1:46pm at J. F. Kennedy International Airport, making history 30 years later.

CNN's Business anchor Richard Quest was among the passengers after finishing his maiden visit to the country.
