Omieri’s remains have been brought back to the Lakeside City to mark the third national cultural celebrations at the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium.

The event runs from Wednesday to Sunday.

The snake died 30 years ago in the hills of Nyakach, Kisumu County following injuries arising from wildfires.

After the death, the remains of the snake were transported to Nairobi for preservation.

After the cultural event, the remains will be taken to Omieri’s Nyakach sub-county ancestral home for three days, before being moved to the Kisumu National Museum until the end of next month, then taken back to Nairobi.

But a section of Kisumu county residents now wants the remains of Omieri to permanently remain in Kisumu, a local.

“Omieri was and remains Kisumu property. Its remains should permanently remain in this land,” said Jackton Otieno.

His sentiments are echoed by another resident Maxiller Orwa who says; “Omieri should permanently remain in Kisumu. Its remains being here will most definitely improve tourism in this region which will, in turn, improve the economy of Kisumu and neighbouring Counties."

“They should give us back our snake,” she added.
