Deputy President Wiliam Ruto is a man to watch during the 2022 general elections. This is by the fact that he has publicly declared an intention to succeed President Kenyatta upon the expiry of his second term.

Even as he sets his eyes on the top political seat in the land, two of his close allies at the political helm risk getting into political oblivion after 2022.

Governors Jackson Mandago and Alex Tolgos of Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet are currently serving their second terms, a thing that makes them ineligible to contest at a similar post come 2022.

Interestingly, the duo is yet to make public their next moves upon the expiry of their second terms.

However, if they aspire to remain in active politics, then the only viable option is to contest as senators in their respective counties. Again, this might be seen as a political demotion.

If by any chance Mandago and Tolgos opt for senatorial politics, then they will still have to contend with stiff competition from other aspirants.

As it is at the moment, unseating Prof Margret Kamar and Kipchumba Murkomen will prove an uphill task for any politician eyeing their respective seats in the next general elections.

With this in mind, the DP Ruto-allied governors should play their cards well if they aspire to remain politically relevant in future, otherwise, they risk getting into oblivion.
