Tension is high in Likia village, Njoro, after a theft on Wednesday night spiraled into a tribal animosity between two communities living in the area.

The theft of 12 sheep left a 33-year-old man killed and his body badly mutilated. Some of his body parts were missing by Thursday afternoon.

The theft of the sheep happened on Wednesday night where the owner raised alarm forcing neighbours to pursue the thieves.

Efforts to recover them turned tragic when the 33-year-old man was killed about 500 metres from where the incident took place.

Residents said that one community was targeting the other and the theft was just a scapegoat.

Things were made worse by former area MP Joseph Kiuna and current MP Charity Kathambi when they clashed in an incident that almost went physical.

Kathambi accused Kiuna of inciting communities in the area and holding night meetings to sabotage her leadership.

On the other hand, Kiuna accused the MP as well as local security agents of tolerating the attack. He claimed that a report had been made three weeks ago of a planned attack to one community but no action was taken.

Nakuru County commissioner Joshua Nkanatha, however, dismissed the claims saying the attack was a normal theft incident.

He said one person has already been arrested in connection with the theft.

Police were forced to eject Kiuna and Kathambi from a security meeting held on Thursday afternoon as matters became hostile.

The two were summoned at the Njoro police station to record a statement over the incident.
