In response to media reports on the alleged supremacy battle, Mutunga appeared to dismiss the threat that the Machakos Governor poses is a threat to Kalonzo.

Using a Kamba saying, he compared Kalonzo to a lion that people mistake for a cat.

"Munyambu wuwiiwe ti mbaka/A Lion rained on is not a cat. So the Akamba say. Barons can only be shaken by progressive political leadership not by those who want to step in their shoes!" Mutunga wrote.

Mutua has angled himself as the next Kamba supremo, a move that further complicated his not-so-good relationship with Kalonzo.

The Machakos boss contends that Kalonzo has had his time and should, therefore, create space for young leaders from the Kamba region.

Dr Mutua has also made public his intentions to run for the presidency in 2022.

Kalonzo and Mutua fell out in the run-up to the 2017 general elections that saw the county boss bailout of the Wiper party and form his own Maendeleo Chap Chap party.
