Almost all Deputy Governors from the Luo Nyanza region are set to go back home after the 2022 general polls.

This will have full effect on Deputy county chiefs who are on their second terms, and who will obviously be seeking to ascend to the top seat upon the retirement of their bosses.

However, with the rise of a clout of stronger leaders while they (Deputy Governors) remain overshadowed by the Governors, they might not become the next county chiefs in the coming elections.

In Homabay for instance, area Deputy Governor Hamilton Orata’s name is not featuring anywhere among the leaders likely to vie for the seat.

The seat is, therefore, likely to go to area Woman Representative Gladys Wanga, or Suba South parliamentarian John Mbadi, both of whom have remained vocal and, therefore, most likely to win.

The case is similar in Migori County where Nelson Mwita seems to have retained his silence at a time when county Senator Ochillo Ayacko is anticipated to run for the post in the poll.

Ayacko unsuccessfully vied for the seat in the 2017 general polls but lost to current Governor Okoth Obado, and could take another shot in 2022 as Obado prepares to head back home or go for a different slot.

In Siaya, area Senator James Orengo who is considered a close confidant of opposition leader, and area political kingpin Raila Odinga seems the most preferred candidate judging by his vast experience.

This leaves out Governor Cornel Rasanga’s deputy James Okumbe whose silence has made him a stranger to many Kenyans as opposed to Orengo who is a celebrity.

The case could be similar in Kisumu where, however, Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o and his deputy Mathews Owilli are serving their first term.

Here, area Senator Fred Outa and former Deputy Governor and Raila’s younger sister Ruth Odinga seem better placed to emerge winner in case of a contest.
