The centre is among infrastructure expected to come up as Kisumu gears towards hosting the Afri-cities conference in 2021.

On his part, Cabinet Secretary for Environment Keriako Tobiko promised that his ministry will work with various stakeholders to ensure water hyacinth in Lake Victoria is eradicated for good.

The CS went ahead to visit the Kachok dumpsite to inspect the ongoing process of removing waste from the area.

“The reason for our presence here today is to come and put our hands together on how to work together towards rehabilitating the lake and turn it into a viable economic hub,” said CS Tobiko.

While addressing Members of the County Assembly last week, Governor Nyong’o said all the waste will be relocated from the area within the next three months.

Kisumu County continues to be a centre of attraction due to the high number of national government programmes and projects being undertaken in the region.

Among the projects is the Universal Health Coverage and removal of the Water hyacinth from Lake Victoria which were launched recently by President Kenyatta and Opposition leader Raila Odinga respectively.
