Opposition leader Raila Odinga and his Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) brigade have maintained that the veteran politician remains an opposition figure.

This is despite latest unfoldings and his operations suggesting otherwise, including sudden silence on national issues and government operations.

Since his March 9 truce with President Uhuru Kenyatta, Raila has among others represented the nation in diplomatic roles, including uniting the warring government and rebel sides in South Sudan, apparently with Uhuru's blessings.

His move to, however, distance himself from Uhuru is most likely in line with his 2022 presidential bid and does not want to be associated with the failing Jubilee government.

Judging by the rising cost of life and runaway graft, Raila will have it harder realizing his longtime presidential bid, should he declare his political union with Uhuru.

He will be subjected to questions on why he never intervened, being the good leader he has repeatedly claimed to be in his presidential manifestos.

Further, he will have demoralized his supporters even more, most of whom are yet to approve the reconciliation.

He will appear a shameless betrayer by joining the man he warned them against and whose reelection he led them in demonstrating against.

Finally, Raila will have proved right a section of government allied politicians who termed his opposition of Uhuru's reelection a scheme to get a piece of the government, otherwise known as 'Nusu Mkate'.

By admitting that he is indeed part of the government, it will be clear that he got his wish, with the truce coming amid an ongoing boycott on selected companies associated with Jubilee.

He would a few days after the truce come out to raise the ban on products associated with companies which allegedly sided with Uhuru in the poll.
