Former Arsenal player Benik Afobe has been plunged into mourning following the death of his daughter.

Afobe, who currently plays for Bristol City, said that the 2-year-old Amora succumbed after developing a severe infection.

She was pronounced dead in a hospital where she had been rushed to receive treatment.

"It is with an extremely heavy heart that the Afobe family have today confirmed the devastating news that their first child, their beloved daughter Amora, 2, passed away late on Friday evening. Amora was taken to hospital for treatment after unexpectedly developing a severe infection. Unfortunately she then suffered a number of serious complications and despite doctors doing absolutely everything they possibly could, Amora passed away peacefully with the love of her family by her side," a statement from the family quoted by Sky News read.

The Sun reports that there was an outpouring of support on Twitter from clubs that the striker had played for.

"Our hearts break for Benik Afobe and his family following the tragic news of his daughter's passing this weekend. The Wolves family are with you, Benik," Wolves, his former club, tweeted as quoted by The Sun.

"The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Stoke City are with Benik Afobe following this morning's tragic news. We'll be with you, Benik," Stoke City also posted on Twitter.

Benik Afobe launched his career in football at Arsenal where he rose through the ranks from the academy system.
