However, in politics today, Mohamed Ali, the Nyali MP, is supposed to overcome many political hurdles to stamp his authority on Mombasa's murky politics. 

His win in 2017 never took many by surprise because he was seen as part of the change that Kenyans have been yearning for years. This was evidenced by his convincing win despite vying as an independent candidate against well-oiled ODM political machinery.

However, immediately after winning the seat, Ali joined Deputy President William Ruto camp to the chagrin of many ODM leader Raila Odinga's supporters in Mombasa who had voted for him despite vying as an independent candidate

Over the past few months, the former media scribe has emerged as a key member of the pro-DP 'Tanga Tanga Movement' that is spearheading his 2022 presidential bid. 

The lawmaker's dilemma is one: Will he stick with DP Ruto or navigate back to the Raila Odinga camp considering the immense political support the former Prime Minister enjoys in Mombasa? 

Then there is Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, the undisputed Coast region political kingpin. 

Joho is a key political lieutenant for Raila in the region. Further, the legislator and the ODM deputy party leader are not in good political books. 

With Joho being the face of Mombasa politics, can Ali survive in 2022? Will his association with Dr Ruto cost him his seat?
