Earlier reports indicated that the slain Rongo University student was married to Okuta, a High School teacher before they separated last year.

They were blessed with two kids. But the family has now refuted claims that she was a married woman. Sharon Otieno’s step-grandfather John Olweya on Saturday revealed that the family has decided to distance themselves from the ex-husband.

Olweya said Okuta never visited their home to make his marriage official

“We are not aware of any marriage between Sharon and any man. The said husband has never paid us dowry and has failed to visit this family to notify us that he was living with Sharon,” he was quoted by the Standard.

“I don’t know whether they were living as boyfriend and girlfriend. But the position of this family is that Sharon had no husband,” added Sharon's' grandfather.

According to Olweya, Sharon Otieno will be buried at her grandfather’s home in Magare village, Homa Bay County. Many had expected that she would be buried at her ex-husbands home as per the Luo tradition.

The family, however, maintains that she will not be buried until those behind her murder are arrested and charge.
