Onyango tucked in a beautiful shot from close range after 24 minutes, after a fine move with Tuyisenge. Gor Mahia, who were dominant throughout the opening 45 minutes were kept out from increasing their lead after some fine saves from Sofapaka stopper Ndikumana.

Sofapaka, who were unbeaten in their last five league games, were lacklustre in the opening period and conceded many chances to a depleted Gor Mahia who had travelled to Angola earlier in the week.

It was a much-improved second-half display from John Baraza's Batoto Ba Mungu side, with Avire and Kitawi both squandering good opportunities to level.

Despite the loss, the former champions still remain 4th in the Premier League as their title hunt continues.

The result means K'ogalo have 25 points after 12 games, one point off second-placed Mathare United who have played two games more, three points adrift current league leaders Bandari FC, who have played a game more.

Gor Mahia now hosts Western Stima in the Premier League at Kasarani Stadium on Wednesday, while Sofapaka travels to Bukhungu Stadium on Saturday to face Kakamega Homeboyz.
