There was chaos at Homa Bay's Kabunde Airstrip after locals thronged the facility, demanding compensation for their land that was taken for the expansion of the airport.
The residents accused the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) of failing to compensate 120 families whose land was taken for the project, resulting in a delay of a flight to Nairobi.
The angry group which carried twigs and placards also harassed passengers, most of them foreigners, telling them to keep off until the 2017 agreement is realized.
"This is our land and you should not step or drive in it so go back or find another route to Nairobi. We will paralyse all activities at the airstrip until the day we will be compensated,” some residents were quoted by the Nation.
It took the intervention of airport staff and the police who were called in to save the travelers and quell the situation.
Airport Manager Wycliffe Kadiya also found himself in trouble when he tried to intervene, with the protesters telling him off, noting that they will not be calm until justice is served.
“You have the ability to travel to Nairobi now. Go tell your bosses there that we will not relent on our quest to get our rights,” they told the manager.
So dire was the situation that a flight from Nairobi had to land and leave the port within ten minutes, with passengers boarding and disembarking hurriedly to avoid the chaos.
