Speaking after being registered ahead of the headline, Passaris called on the government to ensure that the data remained secure, warning that shady individuals could use it for malign purposes.

"If somebody were to, you know, access this data, what can they do? They can know, for instance, where you stay is private. If the government doesn't protect this data then... I think the data protection law is important," she said.

Confessing that she didn't know much about Huduma Number, Passaris faulted the government for not sensitising the public on the importance of the registration exercise and its particulars.

"The government should have run TV commercials explaining to people what is the benefit of Huduma... I think there has been very little information and it's actually against the law. The law requires that the government participates with the public. I am a legislator and I am not sure about everything about Huduma, " she added.

Kenyans flocked to the registration centres in a bid to beat the deadline.

The government says the registration exercise was aimed at streamlining the delivery of services.
