The group was eliminated early Wednesday by commandos from the elite Recce squad after being trapped on the seventh and highest floor of the Dusit D2 Hotel.

According to the officers who did the job, the four men were found speaking on phone to people in Kiambu County and others in Somalia.

The officers believe that their commander was communicating with fellow militants in the neighbouring Somalia, before their death.

The latter is said to have even sent images of the attack victims to unidentified persons in Somalia.

Earlier, they told the Standard, the lead terrorist had communicated with another person in Ruaka, in Kiambu county.

At 4 am, the officers stormed the room where the group was trapped and smeared them with bullets and in a matter of seconds, all the four lay lifeless.

However, two commandos were injured in the legs as a result of grenades that were hurled at them by the terrorists as they stormed the room.

The explosives hit bulletproof shields held by the officers in the front line and bounced back.

Hours later, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that all was well and calm was back in the multipurpose complex.
