Nyumba Kumi elders in Mwembe village, Kisii county, have given a one-week ultimatum to livestock owners who graze them by the Kisii-Kilgoris highway to stop the habitat or risk losing their cattle.

Addressing the villagers on Friday during a meeting to discuss on curbing the grazing habit, Nyumba Kumi chairman Brain Osoro said that the cattle will be slaughtered without the owners' concern.

"These cows risk the lives of out motorists and pedestrians. We can not assume this because several people have been killed here as these animals cross the road anytime," said Osoro.

Grazing beside the busy highway in Mwembe has become a menace that has seen many people lose their life. Last week two people died on the spot after their motorbike crashed head-on with a cow.

Supporting the new rule, the residents of Mwembe showed their solidarity in fighting the dangerous grazing.

"We have been risking our lives so much. We have had many road accidents here as the cows cross the road anytime. Even our groceries have been affected a lot," said Moraa, a business lady.

The county government in the past years warned against the habit and promised the residents to take action against the owners but nothing has been done yet.
